Ganjam district’s one of the interesting pilgrimage sites, Tara Tarini Temple. It is one of the oldest temples of Maa Adi Shakti situated on the kumari hills at the bank of the river Rushikulya.
This place is also worshiped as a Breast Shrine and manifestations of maa adi shakti. It is also known as one of four major ancient Tantra Peetha in India.
History
According to Purana, the origin of Maa Tara Tarini is directly assigned to Daksha Prajapati from Satya Yuga. It is that place where (Lord Shiva’s wife) Goddess Sati’s breast ) fell when Lord Vishnu dissevered her body into pieces to stop Lord Shiva’s dance of destruction (Tandav Nurtya).
The name Tara, the ancient deity of the Mahayana Buddhist Pantheon. It shows the Buddhist influence on the Tara Tarini Temple.
Adishakti is being worshiped as TaraTarini on the blue-capped mountain of kumari hills. At the hilltop, a beautiful stone temple abode of Devi Tara Tarini. The twin sisters Tara and Tarini are worshiped here. This Shakti Peetha is also called as Kalyani Dham.
There were two sisters Tara Tarini lived with Brahmin Vasu Praharaj, who was a devotee of Goddess. One day both sisters went to the hill and disappeared from there.
Vasu Praharaj couldn’t find them anywhere. And that night the two sisters came into his dream and told that they both are incarnations of Maa Adi Shakti. They also asked to renovate the temple and worship the deities.
Festivals Of Tara Tarini Temple
One of the main festivals of Tara Tarini is Chaitra Mela. It is held on every Tuesday of Chaitra Month, which falls on the month of April-May.

The Temple is accessible from Bhubaneswar, Berhampur by road. It’s approx. 160Km from Bhubaneswar. From October to February is the perfect time to visit Tara Tarini.
