Facts Behind This Festival

In Odisha, this festival is special for all Odias because of the English new year and for the astronomical importance.

Another significance of the day is that the days will start becoming longer and warmer. And the winter chill will decline. 

Makar Sankranti in Odisha celebration takes place in every district. But some places have their own grand celebration. Hatakeshwar at Khordha, Lord Jagannath in Puri, Cuttack Dhabaleswar, etc.

This festival is dedicated to the Lord Surya(Lord Sun). On this day lord, Sun enters into the zodiac Capricorn(Makara). 

At Puri Jagannath temple this festival is observed as Uttarayana Yatra. In this festival people of Odisha offer the newly harvested rice to Lord Jagannath.

The rice is mixed with jaggery, grated coconut, banana, cheese, and various dry fruits and milk. This mixture is called “Makara Chaula”. 

This day is also observed as two veshas of Lord Jagannath i.e Nabanka Vesha and Makar Chaurashi Vesha.

Odisha people celebrate this festival in Konark sun temple to experience the northwards swing of the Sun.

Foods During Makar Sankranti

During the Makar Sankranti festival, Odisha is also famous for various mouth-watering foods. We already know about “Makar Chaula”.

People of Odisha make different kinds of food during this festival, they usually make Kanika rice, Dalma, Mix veg, Kheer, different types of pithas, etc.

Odia people love to eat different types of food at every festival.

This year in 2021, the date of Makar Sankranti is 14th January (Thursday). During this pandemic situation, everyone should take care of themselves.

Flying Kites

In Odisha, people of different ages fly kites during this occasion. Children also enjoy flying kites with adults. There is also a scientific reason to fly kites during this occasion.

People of all age groups fly kites on occasion. Along with the adults, children also enjoy flying kites and have fun on this day.

During winter days some people get affected by some infections, skin also gets dry these days. While flying kites children’s as well as adults are exposed directly to the sun, which helps them to get some health benefits.
