Parsurameswra temple is located in Bhubaneswar, which is the capital of Odisha. This temple is considered as one of the best-preserved specimens of Odia Hindu temple. It is built-in between the 7th and 8th centuries CE. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
There are many temples dedicated to Lord Shiva (Lingaraj Temple, Mukteswara Temple, Etc), but it is one of the oldest existing temples of Odisha. It is believed that this temple is built around 650CE in Nagara style.
Inside the Parsurameswara temple, there is a Vimana, A bada, and Sanctum. There is a curvilinear spire over the roof of the temple, this rises to a height of 40.25 ft. It has an additional structure called “Jagamohana”. The temple contains the sculpted images of Shakta deities, which are different from other Shiva temples. This temple is also maintained and administrated by the Archeological Survey of India. It is one of the prominent tourist attractions of Odisha as well as Bhubaneswar.
This temple got its name from the name of Parsuram who is the grace of Lord Shiva and worshiped as Parshurameswar. One interesting feature of the temple is “Saptmatrikas”. The saptamatrikas are The seven mother goddesses: Brahamani, Vaishnavi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Varahi, Indrani, and Chamunda. It indicates every woman who is a mother has the powers of Shakti.
Parsurameswara Temple and Rajarani Temple shows the existence of the Devadasi tradition during the 7th and 8th centuries CE. From October to March is the best time to visit this temple as well as Odisha. At this particular time, the climate is really good to enjoy this beautiful place.
