White fine sands, the roar of the breakers rolling in from the Bay of Bengal with countless devotees gather the place for a cleansing dip are the synonyms to the Puri Beach. The beach has continued to be a divine venue for the maximum number of pilgrims coming to Lord Jagannath PURI.

The annual Beach Festival taking place in November, the beach has now become a favorite gathering place of both Indian and foreign beach lovers. Located at a small distance of 35 km from the Sun Temple Konark and 65 km from the capital city Bhubaneswar, the beach is an ideal place for a holidaymaker for the dearth of the crowd here.

The Puri beaches are also very famous for the sand sculptures created by the internationally famed “Sudarshan Patnaik”. The subjects are basically inspired by sculptures that cover the temple walls.

The beach at Puri offers anyone a unique opportunity to witness the sunrise and the sunset on the beach. Sometimes crowded with holidaymakers bathing in the afternoon, and enjoying the brightly lit booth in the night, the stretches, parallel to the main Marine Drive Road.

A relatively clean and quiet place for sunbathing and a relaxed swim can be found at the eastern end. Local fishermen easily detectable by their triangular straw hats and dhotis serve as lifeguards on the beach; they also take visitors out to sea in their boats to watch the sunsets. On the Chakratirtha side, the long stretch of golden sand is a more balmy and pleasant place to an excursion.

Rail

Puri is an end on the East Coast Railway having direct express and super fast train links with New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Okha, Ahmedabad, Tirupati, etc. Khurda Road Station, 44 km, from Puri is a convenient railhead for the train to Chennai and Western India.

Road

The bus stand near the Gundicha Temple provides connections to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, service every 10-15 minutes. Mini busses to Konark leave every 20-30 minutes and also from Jatiababa Chhak.
